What's Your Opinion?

I am about to ask y'alls opinion on a very touchy subject. It is something where I feel that I will have a different opinion than the rest of you, but nevertheless, I want to find out yours anyway. What I am going to do is give the scenario and then, I will ask some quesions. Based on how I say things, you might be able to see where I stand.....

Here we go:

(I won't be using names, but let's just say they are in the news a lot right now =) A woman finds out that her husband has been cheating on her. Many women are coming forward stating they have had affairs with this woman's husband. What should this woman do? Should she continue to stand by her husband, since divorce should never be an option? Or should she take the kids and leave?

Of late, many women have been taking the former way--countless men have openly cheated and their wives have openly stood by them (or they have stayed in the marriage) Is that something wise for them to be doing? Or should women who are in these such marriage rise up and say "I am not going to take this anymore." Would God despise them for leaving.....or do they have legitimate reasons?

I have my own opinion on this, trust me! But if it were you, what would you do? I will be interested to find out.

Divorce is wrong. But so is adultery. And God DID allow for divorce in the case of adultery.

I think that if men don't begin to receive the consequences for their behavior (ie loss of their children and wife), they will never willingly stop their immoral behavior.

Besides which, for the wife of a cheating man, there is the risk of STD. I think staying with a man that continually cheats on you is about the same as staying with a man that continually beats you. Both are unhealthy situations, for the wife and the children.

Guess you know where I stand.

Mom

Ok....first, I will say that I MOSTLY agree with your mom....but you didn't say if it is repeatedly or not, and I truly believe that each family should take it to the Lord in prayer...and then follow His will for them. I am very close to people who have been 'cheated on'...and that includes a couple who it was the WIFE who cheated/left their husband for another man...so,again, after 20 years of marriage, I would have to say that it is such a personal situation, I would never encourage anyone to divorce, without counsiling and seeking the Lord first. Love you! (and am curious as to YOUR thoughts)

To put it bluntly and in few words: I believe that if a man or woman is committing adultery, then the faithful spouse is allowed to divorce that person.

I'm interested in what your opinion on the subject is, Ella!

I think that the spouse has Biblical "permission" for divorce, but I don't believe it is a definite answer, one way or the other. I think each situation, each couple, has to be looked at individually. We don't know the heart of the spouse who has done it; he/she may be in complete repentance, and the other spouse might not even want a divorce. I don't think it is wrong to get a divorce when there has been marital unfaithfulness, but I wouldn't just say that he/she should leave.

I wouldn't stick around if my husband cheated on me, or physically abused me. Those are the only two scenerios in which I would divorce. Like your mom said, besides the accountability factor, there is the risk of physical harm from disease. Some STDs can be with you for the rest of your life and can even affect your ability to bear children. A man (or woman) who cheats is not only showing a lack of concern for his wife's emotional well being, but her physical well being as well.

I believe that the Bible allows for divorce in the case of adultery. Again that is just my opinion. Please share yours!

I would get a divorce, plain and simple. I just couldn't stay in that kind of relationship. The bible plainly says that if adultery is committed then you can get a divorce. Although I would try counseling first than if that fails divorce would be my next option. But thats my opinion so!

I would love to add more thorough thoughts to this conversation... but it's finals week for me and that means its crunch time :)

So, in place of opinion, I add the following article I came across today that's related. It contains some interesting (secular/nonBiblical) perspectives from the wife of a man who was unfaithful.

This is, indeed, a poignant issue!

PS - kudos on the presentation of this post...keeping everyone in curiosity :)

I would try to work it out. I don't believe in divorce unless abuse is involved but even if you divorce I don't believe you should get remarried if your ex-spouse is still living. You made a covenant before God when you married and getting divorced (and remarried) is breaking it. I don't know if that made much sense. :)
