How Will You Spend Your Time?
This concept is posed in the movie "In Time," the 2011 thriller with Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried. It involves a man named Will Salas, a twenty-eight year old young man trying to make it through the day. He never has enough time to do anything. His fifty year old mother doesn't look a day over twenty-five...but age doesn't matter in this society. It is the hours and minutes she has on her clock that count. So she tries to live every second of it as if it were her last. For who knows, it just might be.
Contrast that with Matthew Bomer's character. His body and mind feel like one hundred and twenty-five, but he has too many hours on his clock. Since his body doesn't age beyond that of a twenty-five year old, and nothing says 0:00, he keeps on living. However, his character WANTS to die. He says "your mind can be spent, even if your body is not. We want to die. We need to." Matthew Bomer then precedes to transfer his time over to Justin Timberlake and now, the roles are reversed. Matthew can die and Timberlake has hours at his disposal (which causes people to go after him, people who want the hours for themselves...but I'm not here to give a movie review. That will come later =D)
As human beings, we lived with this warped sense of time. We do feel as if we have days at our disposal; we can put off until tomorrow anything that we don't want to do. We are content to sit on our behinds and allow life to pass us by--we will catch up to it at some point. Only here is the problem: none of us know how long we have on our "clock." We don't know how many years or days are to be called our own.
In "In Time", Olivia Wilde's character is always rushing--and her most poignant scene comes as she rushes to her son so they can spend time together. She understood that she needed to make every second count; they could be her last. It's actually quite a philosophy to live by. She walked briskly; why dawdle when you use valuable time to get where you need to go? Those little moments add up into valuable ones.
We don't live forever. We weren't meant to. If the Lord had wanted His creation to live forever, He would have made the Fountain of Youth an actuality, or anti-aging creams more effective, or goodness, put anti-aging chromosomes into our DNA. But he didn't. He made us mortal beings. He alone is God; it isn't our job to play that role or have that capability in our hands. Regardless of what the world might say, that fact stands true.
It is my personal belief that the Lord wants us to not waste the life He blessed us with. He gave us breath for a reason--to be instruments of His glory and to enjoy every single minute we have been placed on this earth. It's funny how a movie can remind you of such deep truths. I am resolved to live each day to the fullest.
Will you join me?

Stepping on MY Soap Box
Every little boy or girl wants a role model, someone that they can look up to. Someone who parents aren't ashamed to have their children like. For most individuals, just who their boys and girls call their "idols" doesn't matter. Anyone and everyone will suffice. But for Christian families, there are to be something more--besides a person looking cute or singing your favorite song or playing for your favorite professional sports team. They have to be a good role model in the true measure of the word. A person who lives out what they say their beliefs are. Someone who isn't ashamed to speak boldly about his or her faith. Someone who the media appears to respect and people pay close attention to--looking to see if they are genuine or if they are a fraud. These role models have a lot of living up to do.In the past year, there have been a few guys who have been pretty vocal about their faith in Christ. For obvious reasons, it garners a lot of media exposure, yet they haven't backed down. Tim Tebow is one of the most recognizable names in professional sports right now and a big chunk of that comes as a result of his speaking about his faith, the media reporting it, and people paying attention to it. The fact that he can no longer wear his eye paint with Bible verses (like in the picture above) hasn't stopped him from sharing his feelings and favorite verses. The guy loves Christ and he wants the entire world to know. Heck, he even is open about his virginity and though SNL has mocked it on numerous occasions, he hasn't apologized for it. IN fact, I think that is one of the many reasons he rejected doing 'The Bachelor" (oh what a stupid rumor that was--that he accepted. I laughed heartily at that...and I still do.)
American Idol has its own "Tim Tebow" in the form of Colton Dixon. He is also bold about his relationship with Christ, only in a different way. It takes guts to sing a Christian song during "Your Favorite Idol" week--but that is what Colton did. He made no bones about the fact that it was a worship song and that he had dreamed of singing it. Colton speaks openly about praying before and after performances; his dream is to perform at the Dove Awards and his dream job would be to play with Casting Crowns. All of this information is on the American Idol webpage; anyone could find it. And again, he isn't ashamed of it. It is who he is.
So here is my question? This is my soap box...Where are the girls?
****************************************************************
Girls can have guy role models; there isn't any problem with that. However, it isn't a situation to which a girl can completely relate. Girls want to have at least one girl role model, someone who they can feel is walking (or at least remotely gets) the type of things that girls go through. Yet look around. They aren't there. Christian young women are sorely lacking on that front.
In this day and age, there is so much negative publicity out there involving women. You've got Kim Kardashian--who in order to find a picture where her chest isn't spilling out, you have to wade through five pages of pictures. You've got Snooki--Jersey Shore party girl who is now pregnant.....scary, isn't it? Then there is Lindsey Lohan--and we all know what is going on with her. The point is that the majority of the options for a girls' attention are ones that we want to run in the opposite direction from rather than towards.
I have yet to find a Christian young women in the spotlight--to the extent of Tebow or Colton--who is unashamed about her stance for Christ, her modesty and commitment to purity, her desire to reject the feminism that the Liberal news media promotes.....it's lacking and it shouldn't be. It isn't fair!
Christian teenagers, especially girls, need someone to look up to. We're hormonal, relational human beings who are motivated by what we see. When we see someone acting in an admirable way, we want to be like them. Guys have it--girls don't. Something needs to change, especially if we want a better world for our future daughters and granddaughters.
***************************************
How do we get there? I don't have the foggiest idea. I know that some days, I pray that the Lord would allow me to somehow, someway, be the female counterpart to Tim Tebow (and yes, I would love to marry him, but that is beside the point ;-) LOL) I want to be a person who girls look up to. Yet I recognize that it starts NOW, in my daily life. By going to work in a polished manner, by sharing my homeschooling thoughts to the mother who asks, by admitting that my faith and sense of morals prevents me from behaving in certain manners--these things get you noticed. We all have this God given ability in us.
It isn't through any effort of our choosing. Indeed, it is only by God's grace that we are made into the Spotless Brides that He sees. However, He wants us to show His handiwork to the world. I am resolved to be a Tim Tebow, a Colton Dixon, in whatever sense of the word right now. Maybe someday it will be on a larger scale, I don't know. All I do know is that something needs to change. We need less Snooki's in the spotlight, that's all I can say =D
Okay, I'm stepping off my soap box now and I'm getting started at making a difference. How about YOU?

This Makes Me Sick
Yesterday, I saw this one on Yahoo. It absolutely repulsed me--in fact, it still does. Click on the link and read the story of a Justice of the Peace who doesn't believe in interracial marriage.
So, what do you think about this? Do you think the guy was just in his decision?
For myself, I have to side with the ACLU (and that is saying something, as I usually hate the ACLU) I mean, if this Justice doesn't believe in the "mixing of the races", what does he think of our current president? After all, President Obama isn't completely black or completely white--and everybody loves him. What if he is a baseball fan--a Yankees fan to be exact--Derek Jeter is highly loved and respected--and he is a combination of a black father and a white mother.
I know of several interracial marriages. I could care less if the Lord had someone of a different color in store for my spouse. In my family, there is only one race--the human one =)

A Bit of Rambling
Today, President Obama signed the 767 billion dollar economic stimulus package. You know the one--the one that has an exorbitant, much more so than necessary, price tag--the one that really does NOTHING to "stimulate" the economy--the one that bails companies and individuals out of their problems when they really should deal with the consequences.......yep, it is that bill.
I wasn't in favor of it before it was signed and I am not a fan of it now. I am very proud and pleased to say that my entire delegation to Washington was not in favor of it either (and one of them is a Democrat!!!!!) Congress has done what they do best....they pass measure after measure of wasteful spending and expect either the rich or future generations to foot the bill.
That bothers me. The rich should have to pay taxes, but that doesn't mean I think the poor people should be exempt. I am not into smoking, but I don't believe smokers should have to pay for children's health care coverage. And I don't believe in being so far in debt you can never get out.
I absolutely love this country, don't get me wrong. I am just having a problem with these latest economic decisions that the God-chosen leadership has made. It borders on.....um.....Socialism to me. And that isn't something to be proud of.
Okay, I got it off my chest! =) Do any of you have thoughts on this?

Respectfully Removed
So maybe you have noticed that it is no longer there. It's no longer on our car either.
On November 4, 2008, the Lord made the choice he wanted for the United States of America. January 20, 2009 brought His will to pass. I could be in denial all I want, but that doesn't change reality. For some reason that is beyond my understanding, Barack Obama is the 44th president of this country. As such, I owe the office some respect.
I still have issues with President Obama, don't get me wrong. There are things about him I want to like (the fact that he is young with children is something I can relate more easily to as opposed to a grandfatherish sort) I was pleasantly surprised with his speech yesterday. But I still struggle with the liberal agenda he is seeking to promote; his ideology and mine do not match up at all. Yet he is still my leader, the one God has appointed over me.
It is a high honor to have the title of president. To have the ability to "preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States.....so help you God" is one that should never be taken lightly. And though we can struggle with the fact that we have a liberal president now, we should be thanking the Lord that we have the ability to elect the leader we want. We don't have Socialism, or Communism, or a Monarchy, or screwed elections. We have a free Republic, and for the next four years, we have President Obama.
I guess what I am saying is that the time has come for me to show some respect. For who am I to question God's choice?! Yes, there will probably come a time when I will be so angry and frustrated with him......but I am not there yet. I have my faith in a Higher Power, a God who can change the hardest of hearts.
I am resolved to not make the same mistake twice. President Obama is going to be in my prayers daily. Wouldn't it be awesome to see the Lord turn a radical leftist into a radical rightist? And don't tell me it can't be done, because it can!! In the meantime, I am going to pray for the strength and grace to show some respect.
Would you all consider doing the same?

Saving a Saul
Meanwhile, Saul was uttering threats with every breath. He was eager to destory the Lord's followers, so he went to the high priest. He requested letters addressed to the synagogues in Damascus, asking their cooperation in the arrest of any followers of the Way he found there. He wanted to bring them--both men and women--back to Jerusalem in chains.
As he was nearing Damascus on this mission, a brilliant light from heaven suddenly beamed down upon him! He fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him, "Saul! Saul! Why are you persecuting me?"...........
Saul stayed with the believers in Damascus for a few days. And immediately he began preaching about Jesus in the synagogues saying, "He is indeed the Son of God!"
All who heard him were amazed. "Isn't this the same man who persecuted Jesus' followers with such devastation in Jerusalem?" they asked. "And we understand that he came here to arrest them and take them in chains to the leading priests."
Saul's preaching became more and more powerful and the Jews in Damascus couldn't refute his proofs that Jesus was indeed the Messiah.~Acts 9:1-4, 19-22
To the early Christians, Saul of Tarsus certainly looked like the greatest villian of all time. Just as Barack Obama appears to us today. But to the Lord, Saul was a soul worth saving; his reputation didn't stand in God's way. Consequently, Saul became Paul, one of our Christian patriarchs who endured much for the sake of the Father he once condemned.
Who are we to say that the Lord cannot do the same to President-Elect Obama? Sure it looks impossible to our fleshly nature that Obama can change. His reputation precedes him. But I am not going to put the Lord in a box. For all I know, the Lord's plan before the beginning of time could have been to RADICALLY change Obama's heart and have him at the helm of this nation. That Obama would end up doing what he could to reverse Roe vs. Wade, defining marriage, etc. I don't know, but I am praying towards those ends.
I would encourage you to be praying for Barack Obama as he enters 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. The Lord has given the United States him for a reason, so we had better stop griping and moaning about it. With God, ALL THINGS, even changing a seemingly unchangeable man, IS possible.

I Regret Nothing
Geepers!! I live in a Democratic district now!!
But one thing remains the same as well. I do not regret anything I did yesterday.
I do not regret casting a ballot for McCain and Palin.
I do not regret voting for Jim Risch over Larry Larocco in the Senate Race.
I do not regret voting for Bill Sali over Walt Minnick--even though Sali lost.
My conscience is clear before God.
I was in the minority a great deal this election. I defied the pollsters and voting blocs as a first time voting young woman. Two of my candidates are not returning to Washington. (Well, that's not quite true: McCain is still a Senator from Arizona.) I have a different reason for why Obama was elected and it has nothing to do with what everyone is saying. It wasn't about race; it was Bush, Bush, Bush and Republican, Republican, Republican.
A new morning hasn't given me any new answers as to "Why." The answers are the same as they were at 9:00 MST. God is sovereign, He is in control, and He has a reason as to why Barack Obama will be this Nation's next leader. I do not regret that if it leads to the Lord being raised up, Christians getting more involved, the United States humbling themselves before God. I believe that God will protect his own--even though it does look freaky. But I am doing better.
Getting to do my part by voting, even for the losers and underdogs, has only whet my appetite to do it again. 2012 will find me not only voting, but getting more involved in campaigning for the candidates I believe in.
If that means I am helping the underdog.....I won't regret it.
If that means losing anyway.....I won't regret it.
If that means doing all I can to get Obama out of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.....then I am all for it.
Living in the United States of America is certainly not dull. History can change with each election. And I can play a part. So can you.

Absolutely, Positively, Without a Doubt FED UP!!!
We've got our first black president. Yes, that is momentous. I wish people realized what this means in addition to history being made.
My U.S. House Seat isn't looking that great, either. Boy, how I wish I had gotten involved.
The clock is ticking. Four years....and I get to vote Obama out of office. I am definitely doing my part in 2012.
But you can read my thoughts from earlier in the evening:
Live blogging right now as I watch all of this election stuff unfold. I wish I could say I was pleased and interested with what I am seeing--but I am not! Things aren't looking good. God is sovereign, so I know He knows what He is doing--but there is my flesh which says "How is this good? Why?"
I could be wrong. I'd like to think so. But look at the map.
But am I only fed up with how things are looking? No, I am not. I live in a very conservative family, but since we don't have cable, we aren't in that camp that watches Fox News. I have grown up watching NBC. The people are familiar faces. But if things are supposed to be unbiased, they sure aren't!!! All I am hearing about is the African-American vote and how it will change the face of things.
Now, lest you think I am anti-black, white supremest, I want you to read this post by my dear friend, Jasmine. She's black and it sums up my thoughts and feelings totally. I would love a black president. Just not this one with his policies and stances.
Palin isn't getting coverage. I know she's a touchy subject, but I do like her. Why am I not hearing more the potential of a female vice president? When Hillary was campaigning, that was all we heard about.
And I am sick of being stereotyped. This young voter did not vote for Obama. Getting health care given to me by the government wasn't my top issue. This girl voted for McCain. The Supreme Court was my top issue. And I am proud of it.
Okay, I think I am angry enough. Sadly, all Obama needs to take the presidency is California and something else. Think he's going to do it....at this point any way. May God have mercy on us.

The Many Facets of Feminism
Sarah Palin and Hilary Clinton are two very different women. Sarah Palin is a stanch pro-life supporter; she is for minimal government in matters of guns and healthcare. Governor Palin dresses in skirts. However, according to several dear people I respect, Sarah has been deemed a feminist. Indeed, she has been called a “feminist for life (unborn lives.”)
Now, I do agree with the general consensus of those I admire. Sarah Palin and Hilary Clinton are both in favor of throwing the shackles off…which isn’t right. They think that they can manage both a household and a high-profile career…and usually one suffers, so I will take the former over the latter. Granted, one is more “conservative” than the other. But I have a news-flash for you: Sarah Palin and Hilary Clinton have the same core….and so do we.
Conservative Christians don’t like to admit it, but there are elements of feminism in all of us. Okay, so we might not be out there getting a career. But what about our constant voicing of opinions? Or our independent streaks? What about our “me-first mentality?” Each of these things shows our feminism.
Perhaps you all feel as I do sometimes. I read certain books that talk about not being feminist and how that is wrong…..and then I screw up by making a decision independent of counsel or something. I can feel so inferior, like I am all of a sudden this radical feminist who no longer desires femininity and Biblical womanhood! Do any of you ever feel like that? Sadly, these feelings are made more prevalent than we think, probably because of all the writings out there. They are so good—yet still discouraging!
There is a fine line between being an individual and yet being a servant; we are to be submissive, yes, but not stifled—or at least I don’t think so. I am extremely blessed that in my family, Mom and Dad want me to make decisions…but I never make one without getting the opinion of one or both of my parents first. I have freedom and independence, yet there are safeguards. (Mom and Dad let me have my own e-mail address, but I can never check it without their logging me on to the computer. They also know full well who I e-mail and for the most part, they know what the letters contain because I tell them.) The Lord created women with a mind of their own, so I feel they are to have some of their own thoughts—and provided they don’t do it all the time, I feel they can share them too.
I struggle with not having my feminism pop up more than it should. I far too often voice my own opinions (though I am learning when I should just turn the mouth off.) I do get impatient when waiting for Garrett or Dad to open the door at restaurants. I am far from perfect, so don’t ever think you’re alone in that way!
Honestly, I feel bad for Sarah Palin. Don’t think that I excuse her actions ( I wish she were more of a wife and mother than a politician.) But I think some of the treatment and words about her are unfair. The Lord says that he who is without sin should cast the first stone. I cannot get down in the mouth about her being a feminist (albeit a less radical of one than others I have seen) when I struggle with being a feminist too.
Let’s all try to figure out where feminism rears its ugly head in our lives and try to remove it—yet still be an individual, not a stifled robot, at the same time.

Do Hard Things, My Conscience, and the 2008 Election....Plus My New Address=)
It shouldn't be hard for you all to tell: politics fascinates me. I have always been into it. I wrote back in 2007 how early my "love for it" started. But since many of you are new readers, I will talk about it again. At the ripe old age of two, Mom had me holding a Bush/Quayle sign during the 1992 election. You can imagine my disappointment when Clinton won =) 2000 found me staying up VERY late as I waited to see which way Florida went. 2004 was the same, only with Ohio being the deciding state.
Yet I turned eighteen in February and with that came an even greater excitement. I couldn't wait to cast my first ballot in May. I don't care that I am not driving yet, but to not vote......oh, the torture it would be!!
But as we know, this election has been anything but easy to decide. My candidate went out in the middle of the primary season; there was speculation about him for VP early on, but that quickly died out. I have been left to choose between the two obvious candidates that are out there (or going a different way) and let me tell you.....I have learned a lot about following your conscience and determining the course you want for your nation.
You all know the choices we have out there. Well, I was totally positive which way I WASN'T going to go. But up until recently, I wasn't sure between the Republican ticket or a 3rd party ticket. I spent a great deal of time reading blogs, articles, the Scriptures, and listening to my family and others I respect. What I have come away with is a decision that will surprise many in the Conservative circles I "run with"......I will leave you to figure out what I did and why.
There is so much hanging in the balance this election. I had to take that into consideration. I realized that my conscience might say one thing, but it will say something else to a very dear friend....but that doesn't mean one of us is better than the other (or that one of us is delusional) In fact, it takes guts and doing hard things to admit that people will differ and that is okay.
Yet one thing remains the same with all of us: we recognize that God holds this election in His hands. He knows which states will go blue and which ones will go red. He knows who will take residence in 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. I can fret about it all I want, but that will not change anything. I can pray; I can vote according to my conscience....and I can leave the results up to the Father.

Life is a Highway
When a young man or woman ends high school, there comes the inevitable question, “What are you going to do about college?” Most of us, then, begin the process of finding a university, deciding on our major, and then we pack up to begin the “expected” next stage of life, with plenty of people doing the same thing. Call me a rebel, but I have found that there is another exit for me. It reads: Stay At Home until Marriage with an unknown mileage marker. After much prayer and counsel, I am firmly convinced that is the exit I need to take. So, I wave good-bye to friends as they take their exit and I take mine.
However, no sooner have I begun going down this road than I meet with opposition. My cell phone rings incessantly. “Gabrielle, this is _____. Did I possibly hear you right? Have you opted not to attend college? That is absolutely madness! What about making something of yourself? How will you meet your future husband? You have just written your death sentence with your decision; you are going to regret it!” This call is one repeated over and over again, as people give me their opinions on how I need to be living my life. “What about your cousin, _____? Doesn’t their life hold everything? They graduated with a degree in _____ and have a great job ahead of them. What do you have…baking and cleaning?” Whether these people know it or not, they cause me to wonder if I have taken the wrong exit. After all, I see very few cars traveling on the road I am…and I like driving where there are people!
I contemplate turning around. My family and I haven’t always thought this way regarding college anyway. I read a book called So Much More that revolutionized my thinking. I analyzed if college was really the right thing for me, as a girl who wants to be under Dad’s authority. I consulted with my parents, and between what I was thinking and what they were also, we decided it wasn’t best for me. But did that matter? Everyone else was doing college; surely there was no harm in it. However, I didn’t feel at peace with turning around either.
I pulled over for a minute and just was still. In that quiet moment, I recalled a song that I absolutely love by Steven Curtis Chapman. The chorus and bridge go something like this, “So believe Me now. Believe Me here. Remember all the times I’ve told you loud and clear I am with you, and I am for you. I never have, I never will, abandon you. I am the God who never wastes a single hurt that you endure. My words are true and all my promises are sure. So, believe Me now.” I let those lyrics play around in my head once more. How could I be second guessing what I knew I had to do? Sure, most of my peers had a different goal and destination programmed in their GPS system, but mine wasn’t any less important. The world might say it is, but God told me to take this road, and I had better believe and obey Him. “Okay, Lord. I know beyond a shadow of a doubt you have called me to take this road, yet I feel so alone. Keep me committed to traveling this way. I know there is a future and a hope on the other side; it is just going to take some pain to get there. Help me make it, especially when the world encourages something other than You and Your ways.”
With that, I start the ignition and drive on, staying with my original exit. I play some of the messages that were on my phone. “Oh, Gabrielle! College is a blast! I love being in a sorority, my exams were decent, and I have an incredible boyfriend. Don’t you envy me?” By God’s grace, the message didn’t bother me. I realized that I have my own fun “pit stops” ahead. I plan on studying what I enjoy, yet without the pressure and stress of exams. I will do things with friends, though it will not be all consuming; my family will take top priority. And Lord willing, I hope to have ONE guy when all is said and done. Golly, it looks like a fun schedule to me!
I know I still will have struggles. They are daily, even hourly, sometimes. The road I have chosen to walk won’t be understood by many, Christians among them. However, I know that I haven’t taken a wrong turn, and there isn’t a bug in my GPS. I am right where God wants me for now.
I do not know where you are on life’s highway. Perhaps you have decided to take the university drive, and I wish you all the best. Yet maybe there are a few of you who like me, have taken the alternative route. May I encourage you that you are not alone! I am somewhere on the road too!
Blessings to ALL of you as you embark on the paths ahead of you. May your steps lead to the Master and His ultimate destination! Enjoy the ride!

An Update on Me....and Politics
But on the flip side, I didn't want my blog to sit idle until then. So, I wanted to post some things I have read on one of my favorite subjects--politics! Politics can be a very controversial subject and I do not want this blog to become a place of debate. But sometimes good discussion can come as a result.
This year, it is very hard to know what to do about the presidential race. The Lord knows what the electoral vote will be; we don't have that pleasure. We have to dedicate it to prayer and careful thought. Some things that have piqued my interest and made me think have been:
~~This article I read on Yahoo. Too bad I can't find the actual survey =)
~~This post about politics and the forum of Barack Obama/ John McCain/Rick Warren When I have time I want to watch the actual discussion linked by Jasmine
~~Analyzing voting records. (Maybe some of it will make more sense to you!)
I am interested to know what you gals have to say. Be respectful and courteous. It won't be published otherwise =) No matter where we lean politically, we all need to be praying for our country in this crucial time!

A Rebelution Poster Child
Amazing Grace is one of my favorite movies. I was one who saw it opening week at the theatre; I pre-bought it (only to have to wait an additional six months for it to arrive.) It can be a typical Sunday night movie at our house. Well, when you have just finished Alex and Brett’s book, “hard things” and “character, collaboration, and competence” are going to jump out at you. Even though I have studied Wilberforce to a very small degree, my recent viewing of the film made me more conscious of this amazing man’s life.
William Wilberforce was the leading advocate in England for abolishing the salve trade. It was one of his life’s goals. And it certainly didn’t come easily to him! Twenty years went by before he saw the fruits of his labors pay off. He questioned, he doubted…was the effort and cause worth all the defeat?
It is hard to wait for something you really want or feel passionate about. When we were little, the presents under the trees were torturous! As we get older, we can wonder about marriage and that “special someone” that doesn’t seem to be arriving. Yet these things pale in comparison to wanting something heinous to end (like slavery, abortion, etc.) and nothing seems to be happening. Even when we have the “character” of wanting to see a God-appointed task through, the competence to do it (Wilberforce was a good public speaker and politician), and the collaboration of many people helping us, sometimes it takes more than just snapping your fingers. Anything that is good and worth accomplishing takes time….years if need be. But, oh, how hard it is NOT to give up!
It’s like two football teams in the Super Bowl or BCS National Championship. One has it all: the 17-0 record, the quarterback, the coach, a winning tradition…the other team is constantly under fire for even running “with the big dog.” Suppose they said, “Aw, let’s go home. There is no chance of us winning—no one expects it anyway.” If certain teams I know of took that attitude, the sports annals would not have some amazing games in its archives. So, what if William Wilberforce had said, “my foes are against me. I have kept this up for so many years and I am not getting anywhere. Let someone else take up the fight—I am tired….” William would not be as praised if he had that attitude.
The world loves underdog stories. God does too. Gideon had far less soldiers than his foes; David was a shrimp compared to the giant Goliath. But neither of them abandoned the job God had for them to do. Wilberforce didn’t either and nor can I. We do have odds in our favor; countless people have had to fight and they have won.
William Wilberforce knew “Do Hard Things” very well. And actually, if it had been “Do Easy Things,” his story wouldn’t have been as inspiring. We should take that to heart. Hard is good…it gives God LOTS of room to show His awesome glory and power…but we cannot give up! Press on!

Gaffers and Costume Runners
I had to look it up. A gaffer is “a lighting electrician on a television or motion picture set.” A costume runner is someone who does just that: they run costumes to and from the dressing room to the head dress designer or actor. Honestly, these two people in particular certainly aren’t as glamorous as being a Gwyneth Paltrow, or an Orlando Bloom, or a Nicolas Cage. So, are they even worth mentioning? Alex and Brett’s book made me ponder this.
Gwyneth, Orlando, and Nick are doing “big hard things.” (If you want to say that about the movie industry =) What isn’t big about memorizing lines and cues, performing some of your own stunts, and remembering EVERYTHING? It takes a lot to do all this. Yet what they are doing isn’t the only way to “serve” the viewing public. Gaffers and costume runners, along with many others in seemingly insignificant roles, are doing “small hard things.”
Doing “small hard things” takes a lot of guts. You don’t get praise for it. Your name might appear in a cast of hundreds, but no one sticks around to see it. You aren’t nominated for the “Best Actor” or “Best Actress” award. And yet the movie could not go on without you. For if everyone was big, who would do the small?
The same is true for me. I am not doing much…when you compare me to the other Rebelutionaries in Do Hard Things. I haven’t been featured in magazines and newspapers, or spoken at concerts, or been approached to do something by someone important. When you think about it, you feel puny, unimportant, and a loser. I mean, golly, what is the point in staying home, serving around the house, and ministering to family, friends and neighbors? No one sees or cares…..right?
God does. To Him, “small hard things” and “big hard things” are the same in His eyes. Each is what He has called us to do. One is not more important than the other. And as long as He gets the glory, He doesn’t care if it is in the capacity of seeing poor Africans get clean water or by an unsaved neighbor seeing the Love of Christ through a plate of cookies and a smile.
I have to trust and cling to that. For now, the Lord has called me to be a gaffer. Perhaps by my being a “behinds the scene player” my future son or daughter is the one who will be “the name that everyone comes to see.” Do I ever question that being a gaffer is the way I am to be? Absolutely. Do I ever feel like I am doing positively nothing? Sure. But the Lord rewards ALL efforts for him…even if only lights are being lit or clothes are being washed. For without them, the set wouldn’t be visible to the viewer, the family would be smelly and dirty. As long as we serve in the capacity where we are to be, the movie of “Life” will be a box-office hit.

Do Hard Things
My book finally arrived! Well, actually, it did on Thursday. I had been looking forward to reading Alex and Brett's book for quite a while. It seemed like forever for them to write it and then for it to come out. However, the book was definitely worth the wait!
It had what every book should. It made you laugh (who couldn't with the shower story) and it made you think. I cannot emphasize that point enough. I am totally a Rebelutionary at heart, but Do Hard Things reinforced that even more. However, it made me ask questions like, "am I being faithful in the small hard things," or "am I remembering that my 'big hard things' are just that--hard--and yet are for my benefit?" It was a book that showed that teens are making a difference, even though it might seem so small a movement right now. However, we all do have different roles to play.
Yet the thing I appreciated most about Do Hard Things was that God was given the credit in it all. Alex and Brett, and all the others featured, made it clear that they struggle. They just strive to live for God, and they leave the rest up to Him. The acknowledgements said it best: "we deserve Your wrath, but You give us grace."
I cannot do the book justice. (Though I do have two posts that will show up this week;-) You all just need to read Do Hard Things for yourself. You won't be disappointed!

Honor and Commitment
This lack of trueness to purpose, commitment of spouses, etc. can be very difficult at times. If you are like me, it just gives one more reason for wanting the Regency Era back again :-) However, my family has found that honor did exist at one time---and believe it or not---in Hollywood, the location where you would least find it now.
Listed below are some movies my family and I have viewed (that are entirely decent) and present a manner of honor to the viewer. If you think one interests you, I would encourage you to check it out from the library. You will not be displeased. Also, I believe you will again come away with the "rebelutionary" feeling that by "doing hard things" (striving in just your small world and surroundings) we can bring honor back from the ashes and make it vibrant once more!
Casablanca--(Perhaps you have seen this one, or just have heard the famous line "play it Sam." Rick and Ilsa still are in love with each other after years apart, but Rick knows where Ilsa needs to go...and so does she.*)
The Country Girl--(In the quest to help her husband get rid of his alcoholism, Georgie and Bernie, who is also helping her husband, fall in love. Frank, the husband, realizes how miserable he has made Georgie and offers to let her go. But she knows where her place is and that is with her husband.*)
The Best Years of our Lives--(Coming home from WWII, a solider finds that his wife cares little for him...besides his uniform. In the midst of this, a young woman and a family friend helps the soldier get over his trauma and they fall in love. However, he will stay with his wife, but when his wife leaves him....well.....*)
Roman Holiday--(Okay, everyone knows this one, Princess Anne and Joe Bradley fall in love while she is incognito in Rome. But honor and duty prevail, and she returns to her job as princess.)
*The asterisk mean that there is one scene a piece where the two characters who aren't supposed to kiss, but watch the movie, and you will see how it all progresses to where it should be.

A Woman's Time?
Such was the case with me last Tuesday—Super Tuesday. I already said that I remained glued to my seat, watching in wonder at who took which state. Some were surprises and others were not. It was during a lull of “issuing delegates” that I watched Tom Brokaw make this statement.
He was only reporting the facts…for the most part. Not ALL young women voters plan on voting for Sen. Clinton. However, it shouldn’t be a surprise that the bulk of my peers are the way Mr. Brokaw described. Feminism is running rampant in this day and age.
Women like Oprah, Sen. Clinton, and Nancy Pelosi (among others) all tell girls the same thing: “You are a woman, but don’t let that stop you! You are just as capable, if not more so, of taking on a man’s field and roles! Go out and change the world! Remove the shackles that our grandmothers and great-grandmothers had! And for those of you who do not agree with us, you are weird; you are our worst nightmare; you are living in the days of old."
I will say that these women are true on one score: women can go and change the world…just not in the way they suggest. Even in our churches, the fact that women and men have different roles in the Lord’s plan is mind-boggling to most. People seem to think that those who embrace this way of thinking sit around and do nothing for themselves; they aren’t allowed to think and they are domineered by their husbands, almost like slaves and masters. Another wrong misconception!
God created women to be different. Anyone who says otherwise isn’t paying attention to the Word of God. But it doesn’t have to be a bad thing! We can be so much more than what Feminist society has relegated us to. Truly, where is the joy in taking on a man’s role and yet forsaking what the Lord intended before the beginning of time?
Perhaps it is a “woman’s time….” It’s time to take this world back from the Feminists and instead, we are to get the focus back on God and His original design? I cannot begin to imagine a world in which women embrace their God-given roles once mores. Being a wife and a mother is still a way to “rock the world” and I would love to be able to say to my granddaughter, “It was my generation that helped put the Lord back in the picture of this country.”
To be honest, I do not care if I see a woman become president—but to see femininity and Biblical Womanhood rise up once more in the United States again—that I do not want to miss!

Draw Me Close to You
"Draw me close to you
You're all I want
You're all I've ever needed
You're all I want
Help me know you are near"
2008 is upon us now. I look ahead to the forthcoming year. Yes, there are things that I am joyfully anticipating. I will get to vote for the first time; Lord willing, I will get to meet at least two of my online friends; there are the times with family where many memories are created....the list can go on and on.
However, it isn't just fun things that will await me in 2008. I can see there is much uncertainty. I will graduate from high school--and I won't attend college. I know that I will have much debate with several of those closest to me. Also, my family will begin searching for a church body again. Indeed, that hunt is on Sunday =
I struggle with this feeling every year....maybe every day. I so long to know the answers to my many questions. Where will we get situated for church? And when? How will Nana and PopPop respond when they talk about college and they find out my plans to remain home? Will my relationship with them be changed?
Yet, once again, I want the Lord to be seeing me through the twists and turns of my life's path. I want to feel His nearness as I live my life; I desire the Lord to hold my hand when I can't go on. I can't do it on my own; I can tell you that right now. I don't think I even want to try. My flesh wants to do without the Lord. My spirit wants me to draw close to Him whose love will comfort. I desire to live up to this blog's title: "Truly, how GREAT is HIS faithfulness."
2008 will be different for each and every one of us. Yet my journey isn't more important than yours. However, our prayer should be the same. "Draw me close to you....never let me go. You are the potter; I am the clay. Mold me and make me into the person you have for me to be. Turn my uncertainty into trust, unquestionable, undeniable, trust."
