Keep Moving Forward

In the Disney flick "Meet the Robinsons," Lewis spends much of his time living in the past. His whole goal is to invent a time machine/ memory scanner so he can find out why his mother abandoned him...and change that circumstance. Because he was so wrapped up in such pursuits, Lewis passes up the chance to get adopted by loving new families; he only has one friend. It takes a trip into the future for him to see "what will be"....only if he doesn't seek after the past anymore. He has to keep moving forward to achieve his fullest potential.

Now, back to the real world, so to speak ;-)

A few days ago, I found myself really pondering the past. You see, we do a lot of walking around here; my city is that type of city. Downtown along the river is some of the prettiest scenery we have here..and believe it or not, the college campus fits into that category. My steps found me walking along such a path earlier this week; I found my eyes, mind, and thoughts with the college students as they headed to their classes. And I wondered the inevitable "what if."

It has been a crazy two years. Years in which I took, as I like to call, "a journey through legalism, a journey towards grace." Years in which I believed college for girls was a great evil; times that I believed you could only wear skirts, listen to Christian music, and watch next to nothing of movies/TV...suffice it to say, I am not the same person anymore. (It is a story for another time ;-) I have set my God-given desires on culinary school, marriage and a family...these are the dreams that will not die; I seek His will and pray about them every single day.

Because of past mistakes, however, I can feel these aspirations will never be quite attained. I hacked into my college fund, making it near impossible (without going into massive debt) to attend culinary school reasonably. Because of church changes, personality changes, moves....I don't have a significant other in my life and I wonder some days if there ever will be. A family of my own can't happen until marriage does!

So, on this particular afternoon, the what ifs paraded through my mind. What if I had gone to college right away? Would I have some culinary certification under my belt? What if I had decided to do typical dating instead of a "courtship" or sorts? Would I have found my Prince Charming by now? What if we hadn't moved or changed churches numerous times? Would I have been in a position to be having a family?

Maria Von Trapp once said: "It will be very interesting one day to follow the pattern of our life as it is spread out like a beautiful tapestry. As long as we are here, we only see the reverse side of the weaving and very often the pattern, with its threads running wildly, doesn't seem to make sense. Someday, however, we will understand." I am honest enough to admit that I do not understand Christ's plan for my life; I know there is one. Jeremiah 29:11 reaffirms that to me....but that doesn't mean that I don't doubt....because I do.

As I finished my walk, I sighed a pensive sigh, took a deep breath, and didn't look back. I have to remember that focusing on the past is no way to live my life. I have to keep moving forward. Life is only going to get better, but the past plays a part. Pieces fall into place that might not otherwise do so. Remember in Meet the Robinsons? If Lewis had stopped his mother from abandoning him, he would have missed out on the incredible life and family he gets at the end of the movie?

So what will I end up getting? Only my Father knows. All I can do is trust, pray, and move forward through the doubt.....that's all He wants from me. He has the rest of my life under control; when I get to Heaven, everything that I have gone through will make sense. The same goes for you. I hope that encourages you as you face today!

I came over here from your moms blog and added myself as a follower:)

Just keep doing what you're doing and good things will come your way in due time. I rushed into marriage at a very young age, by the time I was 25 I had 3 kids. My marriage didn't last and while I can't regret it because of the 3 beautiful sons I was given, I do wish I hadn't been so anxious to do it all so young. Luckily I found my true Prince Charming the second time around.

You sound like a wonderful young woman with her head on straight and I know what an amazing mom you have:) Good things will come your way! Going to check out your food blog now!

My dear, you know I struggle with the same "what if" thoughts. If I could just turn the clock back to 1999, I would make a very different decision...one that would not have taken us out of the Deep South and to a place where you and I both struggle with winter. And if Daddy's and my decisions had been different, things for you would be different.

But I have to trust that through that (poor) decision, the Lord has accomplished things that would not have happened otherwise...many of which you know.

I love you, dearheart, and I trust that the desires of your heart will be fulfilled as you keep walking with the Lord.

Love,
Mom

You are blessed to have a good friend in your mom and I pray it will always be so. Walking one day at a time with Jesus will get you where you are meant to go. Keep looking straight ahead and He will get you there! In the meantime, you are a wonderful example of God's grace in a young lady. Be encouraged today!

Blessings,
Sandi

What a lovely post from such a young lady. Your mom introduced me to your blog and I can say I am very surprised by your maturity. I have just recently let go of pondering the past. I had a dream that I did not follow and I let that haunt me for quite some time. It is very wise of you to forget about "what ifs" and live for today. God does have a plan for you, however he unveils it one day at a time. May God bless you in whatever you do. Carla

There are so many "what ifs" in life for us all. It is interesting to look back and see how choices we made influence who we are today, and how our views on different things change, while others stay the same. Walking is a great time to reflect and think as well, and Boise was a beautiful place to do that! :)

Keep trusting our faithful Father with the "what ifs." He does have a reason for it all, even though we can't see it at times, like you said (great quote by the way!). We all have times of doubts, though... I'm very much there with you, especially at different times you know about. It's been a blessing to have you as a friend as we've walked through different things, though!

Hi Ella,
What a lovely post from such a young yet very mature young lady. I am impressed with your grasp of God's working in your life. Everybody at sometimes wonders what if, but if we truly believe in God's sovereignty there really are no what if's.
I think you are right where you are suppose to be.......and the Lord will reveal to you his plan and his purpose one step at a time. Just live by what you know is the right thing to do right now, and the Lord will slowly lead you in the right direction. The most important thing is keep a close relationship with Jesus, then even in the times when things are uncertain you know He has your back, and He will never leave you or forsake you, even when you don't feel it!! He is there!

I believe God is really going to use you in amazing ways, because of your precious heart for him.
Good for you, and it is awesome that you are so close to your Mom,
cause she is one neat lady!!
Blessings sweetie,
Waiting is hard, but good things come to those who wait!! I truly believe that!! This was a wonderful post hon, I think you have quite the writing potential as well.
Hugs, Nellie

Isn't it a comfort that God's plan is perfect and all we have to do is trust and obey? I know it's hard, but in twenty years or so, then you'll look back to the past and see some of this tapestry. :)

I'm here via your mothers blog as well. She is wonderful and so are you.

I can give you an example that took about 30 years to unfold.

In 1975 my dad divorced my mom after 35 years of marriage, Married someone else and had two more children. Can't say I was thrilled.

During the years my only full sibling died, my parents died and I was alone from the 'original' family.

Today my half sister is 33 on Wednesday - and once we were enemies (?) - now I thank God for her and she is my best friend.

You never know God's plans or how long he will take to answer them.

Hang on.

Hi Ella,

I came over from your mom's blog - who is a dear friend of mine.

I was really moved by this post - and you're right we do just need to keep moving forward.

I'd also like to share with you some advice that was given to me about school a while back. The years pass either way - 5, 10, even 15 years. Those years pass whether or not you go to school and even if you take one class at a time, you'll be farther along after each class then you would be if you took no classes. I don't know if you can break up attending culinary school in this manner - but I thought I would share it, as even though it took me 10 years to get my degree I did it.

Blessings

Sandy
