The Christmas Trees God Gave Us

Around Christmas, there are many, many smells permeating the house. They come from the candles in the bathrooms and the scent pot in the kitchen. Though on days when the oven is on, cinnamon, nutmeg, peppermint, chocolate bring a whole new flavor......and set your taste buds watering. But there is one scent we do not have at Christmas. That is the scent of a freshly cut Christmas evergreen.

In my entire life, we have only had a real tree two times. But when Mom figured out that all of her headaches were from the fragrance of pine, the real tree idea was scrapped. So, while we don't have the annoyance of needles everywhere on the floor, we don't have that distinct spiciness...unless we have an evergreen scented candle burning.

You know what? I don't mind. What we do have in the form of our artificial Christmas tree means so much more to me.

From June of 2003 to July of 2005, my dad was unemployed. It is a long story--far too long to go into detail now. I will only say it was a time when we saw the Lord do amazing things for us. Sure, you see Him act all the time, but when you are in dire straits, it takes on a whole new meaning. One such way we saw the Lord was by His giving us our Christmas tree.

Now, lest I paint a terrible picture, I want you to know that we weren't destitute--we had money (though granted, we were living off of our previous home's equity.) Needless to say, when money is tight, the last thing you do is spend it on something frivolous like a tree that will die in a few weeks. By this time, the artificial tree that I had grown up with had "bitten the dust" and Mom's allergy had been discovered. So, we were at peace about not having a tree to place some presents under. After all, that doesn't matter anyway. But God had other ideas.

Some friends at the time sent us a check in the mail. That had been happening a lot. People were doing things anonymously for us--Garrett and I had even been on the receiving end with gift cards to Walmart. However, this particular check wasn't anonymous--and there was a purpose for it. They wanted us to buy a Christmas tree.

Now, they didn't know about Mom, but we decided to do exactly what they said. We bought a new artificial tree with their thoughtfulness towards us. Every year when we set it up, we are reminded of the trials we had during Dad's unemployment--and the provision and compassion of a Loving Father.

But it doesn't stop there. In my bedroom every Christmas, I am reminded of some unknown person's thoughtfulness. With that Walmart gift card, I bought a small artificial tree of my own for $2. I cannot thank the person who showed love towards me those years ago--I am not entirely positive who did it. But I can thank my Lord, who even cares about the little things, even Christmas trees.

The individuals God used to fufill his purposes have left our lives now. But what they did has not. And every Christmas, I get the opportunity to remember what my family went through. I wouldn't want to experience it again--but oh! The memories!

What has been one instance where you are reminded again and again of God's provision and caring nature?

Even the pine scented candles give me a headache. I guess I'm allergic to all forms of pine oil.

I think of this situation and I immediately think of James 2:15 and 16. That passage talks about seeing a person in need and then either doing or not doing something about that need. sure, we can and should pray for those in need, but, often God wants us to do much more than pray. He wants to use us in some way to answer that prayer. And that's what those people did for us. They saw a need and did something to meet that need. I pray we can all be James 2:15-16 people.

Love,
Mom

My mother is like that: with candles and perfume. If we're at the mall and I try on a tester lotion sample, she makes me wash my hands = ) God's hand in life is so evident in stories like these, aren't they?

This was such a beautiful story to share! It's so amazing to see how God works in our lives even during difficult circumstances.

I've seen the Lord repeatedly work in so many different areas of my life. When my older brother moved out of the home, God strengthened my faith in Him and helped me grow in Him more and more each day. Without that foundation I had in the Lord, I don't think I would have been able to get through that trial. He has also sent beautiful Christian people into my life at just the right time. And even though I don't keep in touch with some of those people anymore, I am still amazed at how God used them to help me in my walk with Him.

We serve a mighty God!

My dad was laid off three times in a three year period of time. The Lord provide for us during those times in all sorts of ways. To many to list. The year my dad was laid off or over 6 months we were given a $500 gift card for Christmas from someone. It came in the mail. Mom and dad used it wisely but it was the best Christmas. Mom made all our gifts that year...she made me a house coat and a doll from material she already had and my brother pj's and a blanket, she also filled a stocking with lots of homemade treats and it was the best!

My Dad's job isn't the best in the economy right now...he works really hard and sometimes the ends don't meet, but whatever the case the LORD ALWAYS PROVIDES! It is a wonderful thing for us children to see. Last year when it was really tough, we were finding checks in the mail...sometimes with a name, and sometimes without~ They were sent only as needed...God is so good:)
This is a wonderful post Ella! ~Thank you~

My father was out of work for a year and a half. I remember Christmas being very wonderful that year even though we had very little money to spend for gifts. We made each others gifts that year cookies, scarves, blankets, ect. It was great! So far I remember that being the best Christmas ever. The Lord certainly is good in those times of need.
Have a very Merry Christmas!!!!!
((hugs))

I absolutely loved hearing all of your stories. It sounds like that at one time or another, we have all experienced the same things--and have felt the same responses. How great is our God!!

I just wanted to let you know that I've given you The Christmas Spirit Award...you need to share the reasons you love Christmas.
(I didn't post the icon or the rules on my blog, as I didn't know how to do it).

Love,
Mom
